The Cerros Maya (Spanish for ‘Maya Hill’) Archaeological Reserve is a beautiful 53 acre hilltop site overlooking Corozal Bay.  It was occupied by the Maya in the Late Pre-Classic Period (300 BC to AD 300) and was, for much of this period, an important trading centre due to its strategic location at the mouth of the New River.

The inhabitants of the site utilised raised-field agriculture and constructed several plazas with five temples, two ball courts and several Stucco masks up to 4m high which were changed little after the Late Pre-Classic Period, making the site archeologically important despite it’s relatively small size.  The New River also supports a variety of wildlife including water birds, crocodiles and manatee.
